Introduction

This is the online blog / diary for the October – November 2009 Web Authoring - Level 3 group.

Over the last 5 weeks students have been learning how to use the web authoring package Adobe/Macromedia Dreamweaver version 8, looking at key areas such as:

  • Laying out a website using basic HTML code
  • Defining and managing a website within Dreamweaver
  • Page properties (colours, background, fonts etc) – Internal styling
  • Page layout via the use of tables
  • Use of Javascript rollover buttons/text within Dreamweaver
  • ImageReady/Photoshop integration to create more stunning interfaces.
  • Basic CSS, allowing formatting to more than one page.

Where time allows, students will also be shown how to upload their finished websites onto the World Wide Web.


Evidence Of Work

(Documented via submitted proposal to CMP brief)

pdf-logo1As part of their final project students have been given a Student Brief outlining the different elements that will need to be met enabling them to successfully gain their final grade.

The student brief has been broken down into the following areas:

Plan of Action (Evidenced via online blog / proposal)

This will include the students ability to meet the CMP brief looking at such areas as:

Initial Product Ideas

An overview of the students knowledge regarding the product – this will be linked closely to the original client brief (see student brief – above) provided by CMP.

Layout / Design Ideas
This will need to show an outline of the students initial ideas – this can be through the use of sketches /digital images looking at such areas as -

Table layouts / site flow chart.

Impact Level
An overview of the site’s impact upon the web – looking at such areas as; choice of colours, fonts, logos and overall design layout.

Interactivity
How well does the site interact with the end user – This will need to show such evidence as:

Use of – Image Ready, CSS, Roll-overs or Flash based buttons.

Accessibility / Usability
How well will the site address the issue of accessibility.  Time will need to be spent ensuring the site addresses such issues as screen readers and users with visual impairments.

On-line Blogs / Diary (wordpress.com)
Students have been asked to look at diarising their creative through the use of an on-line blog / diary.  The blog will need to identify the following key areas:

Past Learning / Plan Of Action
This post will show students initial thought process (information from the initial CMP proposal can be used at this stage) and how past learning (taught classroom sessions) has influenced the overall design process.

Review of Final Project
This post will look at reviewing and reflecting on the overall design process, focusing on how well the project met the original brief / proposal.

Additional
Students have been encouraged to look at creating a third blog / adding to their first blog documenting any substantial design ideas used within their

Students have been informed that blogs can be submitted on-line or by use of Microsoft Word.  Each blog will need to have at least a 400 word count and look at using embedded images to accent key areas.

Help at this stage can be given to students, but may result in a reduced final mark.

Short (Final) Presentation
Students will need to a short final presentation.  The presentation will look at evaluating the final project against the following key areas:

Aesthetics
Use of colours /fonts / logo / layout

Interactivity
How does the user interact with the website – have such areas as roll-overs (Image Ready / Dreamweaver), CSS, Flash Buttons been successfully implemented.

Accessability
How the implementation of accessibility been included – alternative text (for screen readers), choice of colours, and layout.

Fit for Purpose
How closely does the website meet key points laid out within both the original CMP brief, as well as additional specifications added as part of the proposal stage.
